I was thrilled to have been invited to speak on two panels at this year’s Battle of Ideas Festival in London. The first took place on Saturday morning. Entitled, “Sex Realism and the New Book Burnings,” the panel featured myself, Gillian Philip, Jenny Holland, Matilda Gosling, and Suzanne Moore, and was moderated by Timandra Harkness.

I presumed part of my role in attending the festival was to report on how terrible things are in Canada—much more terrible than they are even in the UK—and think I succeeded. It is one of my greatest passions, to be sure, so I am well-practiced.

Some of you may have noticed I can be verbose, and sometimes blab on at length, so struggle to stay within tight time frames when speaking publicly. All panelists were offered five minutes for introductory remarks, and naturally what I planned was far too lengthy and I didn’t bother trying to stay on script either way.

Here is what I intended to say, in any case:
