Meghan, Alain Quillien, a French civil servant, first used the word «Islamophobie» in a book on French West Africa published in 1910. The English word “Islamophobia” comes from his usage. For a Frenchman writing at that time this would seem like a natural construction since the late nineteenth century had seen words like «anglophobie» and «francophobie» being created, and in 1901 Anatole France had used the word «xénophobie» in one of his works. Just the same, I agree that it is an unusual construction for a religion. Nobody speaks of “Christianity-phobia” or “Judaism-phobia.”
