To be honest, I haven’t listened to the episode (yet) but being a San Francisco Bay Arean, I knew people who died from the disease, read the Sunday obituaries, especially after the silliness of GRIDS (Gay Related Immune Deficiency Syndrome), which for years had page after page of people “passing after a brief illness, as the tainted blood supply, for which the blood suppliers avoided testing, ripped through surgery patients and hemophiliacs, not to mention intravenous drug users, and their spouses and lovers. Not to mention the gay population.
It’s a horrible disease that literally rots people to death. And we should thank God for the antiretrovirals. People either ignored the disease because the “wrong people, got ill at first or they blame the victims calling the disease God’s punishment. Until the disease made its inevitable jump to the general population.
