“On the sixth day of Hate Week, after the processions, the speeches, the shouting, the singing, the banners, the posters, the films, the waxworks, the rolling of drums and squealing of trumpets, the tramp of marching feet, the grinding of the caterpillars of tanks, the roar of massed planes, the booming of guns—after six days of this, when the great orgasm was quivering to its climax and the general hatred of Eurasia had boiled up into such delirium that if the crowd could have got their hands on the 2,000 Eurasian war-criminals who were to be publicly hanged on the last day of the proceedings, they would unquestionably have torn them to pieces—at just this moment it had been announced that Oceania was not after all at war with Eurasia. Oceania was at war with Eastasia. Eurasia was an ally.”
Watch this video very carefully. Do you recognize the rhetoric?
During a news conference at Parliament Hill yesterday, NDP party leader Jagmeet Singh says that “Canadians woke up to a trade war.” As a result, we are in a “dire situation”—an “emergency” much worse than what we faced during “the pandemic.”
We are under attack, and Canadians must “fight back.”
“This is going to be a difficult time,” Singh warns. We are going to see mass unemployment, therefore we must put democracy on hold and ensure we can get as many Canadians as possible back on some kind of “pandemic-style relief.”
Does any of this sound familiar?
Prepare for the worst. The government will ensure it comes. The economy will worsen, more and more will become dependent of government handouts, debt will get worse, inflation will get worse, if you’d hoped for tax cuts boy will you be disappointed, and oh did I mention we can’t have an election?
Not now, not when so much is at stake! Think of the workers.
This time, we have an even more perfect enemy. We are not mishandling a virus, we are dealing with an “unprovoked attack” by an evil man. Conveniently, none of this is the Canadian government’s fault—you can forget about seeing any “Fuck Trudeau” signs (or “Fuck Carney” signs, I suppose, seeing as he is about to be inserted as the new leader and PM, whether you like it or not), because this is all Trump’s fault.
Dear Canada is pure and innocent and America is mean and orange.
This situation was completely unavoidable, Singh claims. There was nothing that could be done to “appease Trump,” as he is nothing but a bully aiming to destroy Canada.
By the way, anyone who doesn’t embrace this rhetoric and rah rah rah for “Team Canada™” is a traitor.
All I can hope for is that we have not forgotten recent history so quickly that we can’t recognize this attempt to manipulate us once again into fear and compliance. My hope is dwindling at the sight of all the chest-pounding and toque-waving. That’ll be another shot of Canadian Club, barkeep!
Trump is not a threat to Canadian democracy or your sovereignty. The people screaming emergency at you in order to convince you to abandon your rational senses and drag your chair in front of the telescreen for the Two Minutes of Hate are the threat.
