Trudeau is to blame for our bad relationship with Americans—not Trump
Booing the American national anthem doesn't make you look tough—it makes you look stupid. And it's making things worse for everyone except the Liberal Party.
Canadians seem perpetually clueless as to their global reputation as silly dorks, and the current moment is no exception.
Mass attempts at “tough guy” behaviour read as laughable for a country that ran scared of fresh air and bouncy castles just a couple of years ago, but even before that Canadians have long been viewed as the contentedly slow cousin stuck at the kids table even after they turn 18.
Prior to Justin Trudeau’s decision to follow in Mussolini’s footsteps, it was cute when Canada reached at relevancy—excited every time their name was mentioned by the cool kids across the border—but that all went to shit when he tried to take away our rights and destroy those who wanted to keep them.
It’s ok to not be America. There can only be one, after all. But the strange combination of envy, tied to a resentment so extreme it’s become a national identity, has become less cute than it has ugly.
Canadians have always insisted that America is not just trashy and tacky and loud and rude, as compared to the neat and tidy and polite and nice Canada, but also undesirable. Why on earth would we want to be America when we could be Canada—able to rest easy knowing we are in danger of nothing because no one cares enough to endanger us? Plus, our bigger, meaner, richer cousins will protect us from anyone who tries.
The thing we forgot is that if we expect to be taken care of and protected by a stronger power, we should probably avoid disrespecting them…
