Journalist Rupa Subramanya opined on the lack of patriotism expressed by Canadian “conservatives” today, comparing them to the likes of MAGA, and their commitment to “fight[ing] for America.” On X, she wrote:
“Whatever you think of MAGA, especially during the current hostility between the U.S. and Canada, they fight for America, and they're patriots. You don’t have to agree with what Trump is doing domestically or internationally to recognize that his politics are fundamentally patriotic. More broadly, the typical American response whether they're MAGA or not isn't to denigrate America or dream of leaving it when things are going bad, but to fight to take it back.”
By comparison, Subramanya says, “Their Temu Canadian imitators do the opposite.”
“…You'd be hard pressed to find this attitude among conservatives anywhere on the planet. They fight against Canada. They denigrate the country to Americans, cheer when it’s humiliated, and talk about leaving rather than fighting to fix what they think is broken.”
She’s not wrong. But she’s missing the “why.” Many Canadians who have seen their country destroyed by the Liberal Party over the past decade have little reason to exhibit patriotism. There is no reason to fight alongside their government because their government isn’t fighting for them. The government meant to be protecting the country and its citizens do not. While the Trump won two elections by speaking to and standing with working class Americans and by fighting for the country he is tasked with protecting, as President, the Canadian Liberal government has done the opposite.
