One evening early in November, after a months-long legal battle, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) appeared at Universal Ostrich Farms with snipers, slaughtering 300+ ostriches. The owners of the farm—a family—were forced to listen as their ostriches, many of whom they’d had for 30 years, were killed in an inexplicably inhumane way.
The Canadian government used a supposed “H5N1 outbreak” as an excuse, but many, including the farm owners, believe something much more nefarious iss afoot.
I spoke with Viva Frei about the scandal.
