Why do the privileged love socialism?

Zohran Mamdani’s primary win in the NYC mayoral run shocked many, who wondered why people would support a candidate with so many poorly thought out policy proposals. What is the explanation for the enduring popularity of socialism—particularly among the young and very privileged?
