In May 2021, the CBC reported that the remains of 215 children had been discovered at the former site of the Kamloops Indian Residential School in British Columbia. There was mass outcry in Canada, flags were lowered to half-mast, there were widespread calls to cancel Canada Day, and Justin Trudeau was photographed holding a teddy bear at what turned out to be a Catholic cemetery. More such ‘discoveries’ at other former residential schools followed.
While it is true that terrible things happened at residential schools, the headlines about these supposed “mass graves” were not. No remains had been discovered. There was no excavation. Nonetheless, Canadians cling to the story, calling anyone who points out that you can’t report that things happened that did not a “racist” and a “residential school denialist.”
When MLA Dallas Brodie pointed out that the “mass graves” story was unfounded, BC Conservative Party leader, John Rustad, kicked her out of caucus.
We are used to the left cancelling people for disrupting woke narratives, but many expected more from the BC Conservatives.
I spoke with Brodie this week about what happened, why the Conservatives in Canada is still failing at courage, why people keep voting for parties that destroy their cities, and more.
