I have a very high number of gay friends and only one of them seems able recognize the conflict with trans rights, and even in this case, after he "confessed" his views, he jokingly said he'd have to kill me in case anyone found out how he really saw the issue.
I first came across the critique of public sex as activism in Sheila Jeffries' writing and it had a huge impact on me. Having been so immersed in the gay community as I had been for most of my life, I never questioned it. Now I see it as a masculist display of power in the public space, not unlike mobs of sports hooligans. The bottom line in both is any objection will be met with [likely sexual] violence.
