Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s sheen has grown tarnished as Canadians have seen through the “nice guy” veneer. Trudeau was re-elected for a third term in 2021, but since then another politician has shown himself to be a genuine threat to the his power.
Pierre Poilievre, leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, grew evermore popular as Trudeau’s vaccine mandates and authoritarian treatment of the Trucker Convoy was broadcast throughout the world. Not only did Poilievre support the Convoy, but he spoke out against the Liberal Party’s attempts to crack down on free speech, their carbon tax, and their controversial gender identity policies operating across the country since 2017. Poilievre wants to defund the CBC, “axe the tax,” and prevent males from competing as female in sport, offering Canadians a genuine chance at escaping the embarrassing international reputation developed by Trudeau’s Liberals.
He appears to be a genuine fan of freedom — a rarity in Canada. Is this our next populist Prime Minister?
I spoke with Andrew Lawton, senior journalist at True North, host of The Andrew Lawton Show, and author of a new book, Pierre Poilievre: A Political Life, about the politician’s history and future in Canadian politics.
