It's good discussion Meghan, except when John makes the argument that those advocating for censorship should be careful, because in the future the political shoe may be on the other foot. First, this is simply not true - people on the left are far, far more like to support censorship than conservatives; in the reverse case leftists wouldn't have much to worry about. But secondly, those advocating censorship are not misinformed or naive; they're calculating and are simply concerned with power. They're not going to be swayed by these types of arguments. Keep up the good work Meghan!
I see what you're saying, but look at what's happened to the leftist feminists who found themselves banned from speaking about gender identity ideology but still refused to support free speech for their political 'enemies'....I think that's more the point: you don't know when you will suddenly be on the 'wrong' side, right?
Yes, I think I understand what you're saying from a moral point of view - if you want freedom of speech for yourself, you should be willing to grant it to others. And yes, people should have the foresight to consider the possibility of losing power. What I'm saying though, is that I don't think such moral points are even considered in modern leftist thinking. I think their support of free speech or censorship is purely utilitarian - will it advance or hinder my goals? I think conservatives or even classical liberals need to disabuse themselves of the notion that our current elites haven't thought things out, or are missing something. When it comes to censorship, they know exactly what they're doing.
I think the left doesn't value free speech as a right, in part because they think 'hate' speech' is about 'them' not 'us'. So they genuinely believe 'stopping hate speech' is stopping 'bad' or 'stupid' people who are not them and are enemies of society.
It is the Washington State so-called Human Rights Commission that has forced the female-only "naked lady" spa north of Seattle to accept intact males. The court upheld the Commission. So yes, so-called "human rights" laws and commissions are being used to silence gender critics in the U.S.
Woke Canada!
It ain’t even a real country anyways.
